Challenge Day

BetheChange

Challenge Day 2012: January 17-20

East Cobb’s 7th graders are changed – and they’re ready to “Be the Change.”

For four years, the EMCS Foundation has brought Challenge Day to the school’s 7th graders.

No one left unchanged.

In 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, about 1,600 students and 400 adult volunteers have learned about themselves and one another through Challenge Day. They’ve pledged to do their part to make ECMS a place where every child feels safe, loved and celebrated. They learned how to connect with classmates outside their comfort zone. And they experienced first-hand how taking the risk to connect with others breaks down the barriers among people of different backgrounds.

Help us bring Challenge Day back for next year’s 7th graders — and provide this amazing experience to ECMS kids for years to come.

About Challenge Day

Challenge Day is a transformational day of leadership, power and possibilities that can change the way people view and relate to one another. The experience helps address issues of violence, teasing, social oppression, racism, harassment, conflict management, suicide, peer pressure, alcohol and drugs.

Facilitated by professional leaders from the Challenge Day organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in California, its goals are to …
>      help stop the teasing, violence and alienation that is part of the school experience for millions of young people
>      increase personal power and self-esteem
>      shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support
>      eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence and all forms of oppression
>      unite the members of the school and community and empower them to carry the themes of the program back to the greater school population

What happens at Challenge Day?

Challenge Days are powerful, high-energy programs in which youth and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning processes. Games, trust-building activities and talks let students see themselves and their peers through new eyes. Youth are given opportunities to speak out about what’s really going on with them and what they need from one another. Students leave the day leave feeling empowered and committed to making a positive difference.
